What is Taxotere : docetaxel?

Taxotere – Docetaxel is a Cancer medicine that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body.

Taxotere – Docetaxel injection is used to treat breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, stomach cancer, and head/neck cancer.

Taxotere – Docetaxel may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

Important Information

Docetaxel can cause severe side effects including death, especially if you receive high doses, if you have liver disease or if you have non-small cell lung cancer and you have been treated in the past with chemotherapy that contains platinum (cisplatin, carboplatin, oxaliplatin).

Docetaxel can also cause a life-threatening allergic reaction. Get emergency medical help if you have hives, a redskin rash, difficulty breathing, if you feel like you might pass out, or if you have swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Docetaxel can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. Your blood will need to be tested often. Your cancer treatments may be delayed based on the results of these tests.

Docetaxel may cause fluid intention or severe skin reactions. Call your doctor if you have swelling of your ankles or feet, rapid weight gain, or redness and peeling of the skin on your hands or feet.

Before taking this medicine

You should not receive this medicine if you have a low white blood cell (WBC) count, or if you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to docetaxel or to any medicine that contains polysorbate 80.

Tell your doctor about your complete health history and all medications you have used. Docetaxel can cause severe side effects including death, especially:

  • if you receive high doses;
  • if you have liver disease; or
  • if you have non-small cell cancer and you have been treated in the past with chemotherapy that contains platinum (cisplatin, carboplatin, oxaliplatin).

To make sure docetaxel is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have ever had:

  • liver disease or  alcoholism;
  • heart disease;
  • fluid retention; or
  • if you need to limit your alcohol intake.

Using docetaxel may increase your risk of developing other types of cancer, such as leukemia. Ask your doctor about your specific risk.

Do not use docetaxel if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby. Use effective birth control to avoid pregnancy during your treatment with docetaxel. Follow your doctor’s instructions about how long to prevent pregnancy after your treatment ends.

It is not known whether docetaxel passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while receiving docetaxel.

How is docetaxel given?

Docetaxel is injected into a vein through an IV, usually once every 3 weeks. A healthcare provider will give you this injection. You may receive other cancer medicines at the same time.

Tell your caregivers if you feel any burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when docetaxel is injected.

Docetaxel can be harmful if it gets on your skin during an IV infusion. If this happens, wash right away with soap and water.

Docetaxel can lower blood cells that help your body fight infections and help your blood to clot. Your blood will need to be tested often. Your cancer treatments may be delayed based on the results of these tests.

You may be given steroid medication to help prevent serious side effects or allergic reaction. Keep using the steroid for as long as your doctor has prescribed.

You may need to have your vision checked if you have any vision problems while receiving docetaxel.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Call your doctor for instructions if you miss an appointment for your docetaxel injection, or if you miss a dose of your steroid medication.

What happens if I overdose?

Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line at 1-800-222-1222.

What should I avoid while receiving docetaxel?

This medicine may impair your thinking or reactions for a short time after each injection. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Tell your doctor at once if you develop signs of infection.

Avoid activities that may increase your risk of bleeding or injury. Use extra care to prevent bleeding while shaving or brushing your teeth.

Docetaxel contains alcohol and may cause a drunken feeling when the medicine is injected into your vein. Avoid drinking alcohol on the day of your docetaxel injection.

This medicine can pass into body fluids (urine, feces, vomit). For at least 48 hours after you receive a dose, avoid allowing your body fluids to come into contact with your hands or other surfaces. Caregivers should wear rubber gloves while cleaning up a patient’s body fluids, handling contaminated trash or laundry or changing diapers. Wash hands before and after removing gloves. Wash soiled clothing and linens separately from other laundry.

You need to remember certain points such as –

  If you are a woman who is pregnant or wants to have a baby and you are taking Taxotere injection, let your doctor know right away. This medicine may cause harm to the unborn baby. Use a birth control method while you are taking this cancer medicine. Ask your doctor to help you choose a method of birth control that will work for you.
  For the safety of the baby, breastfeeding isn’t recommended during treatment. Many Cancer drugs like Taxotere, may appear in high levels in breast milk and could potentially harm your nursing baby. To get more information, you should discuss this with your doctor. Your health care provider might recommend that you stop breast-feeding temporarily or permanently — depending on how long you need to take the medication.
  You will need to have regular blood tests and check-ups during your treatment with Taxotere. Blood tests are done to help watch your body’s response to treatment. They can show small changes before problems get serious. Keeping track of your results lets your doctor take action as soon as your blood counts change to help prevent many kidney-related problems and renal treatment side effects.
  Tell your doctor if you have ever had any unusual or allergic reaction to Taxotere drug or any other medicines. Also tell your health care professional if you have any other types of allergies, such as to foods, dyes or preservatives. For non-prescription products, read the label or package ingredients carefully.
  Whether it’s safe to drink alcoholic beverages during treatment with Taxotere depends on a number of factors, including which drugs the patient is receiving. Alcohol can interfere with the way some hepatitis drugs work, so patients should speak with their doctors about any potential side effects of drinking during treatment.
  Always consult your doctor and pharmacist about taking any other prescription or non-prescription medication, including herbs, supplements and street drugs. This medicine may affect the way other medicines or products work, and other medicines or products may affect how Taxotere works. Taking Taxotere together with certain medicines or products may cause serious side effects.
  If you miss a dose of Taxotere, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. If it is close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your dosing schedule. Do not use extra dose to make up for a missed dose. Please consult your doctor to discuss changes in your dosing schedule or a new schedule to make up for missed doses, if you have missed too many doses recently.
  Taking a single dose of expired medicine is unlikely to produce an adverse event. Expired drug may become ineffective in treating your prescribed conditions. To be on the safe side, it is important not to use expired drug. If you’ve had a medicine for a while, check the expiry date before using it. If it has expired or is damaged, return it to your pharmacist for disposal.
  Before using Taxotere, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially if you have liver problems (including hepatitis B or C infection), diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, heart or pancreas problems, or low blood potassium levels etc.
